Class 3a

Driver reports late night road encounter at Sulphur River near Commerce.

Report Details

Occurrence date: August/1977
Location: Hunt County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Commerce
Time / Conditions: Late at night, 11 pm — It was very dark that night with no moonlight. The area is mostly cattle land.
# of Witnesses:

Witness Account:
Around 11 pm returning to Commerce along Hwy. 50, as I approached the Sulphur River bottom I noticed movement along the east side of the highway near the shoulder. There was another vehicle heading south coming from the opposite direction of my travel. At first I thought it was just a shadow caused by the on coming cars headlights. As I got closer the object I had noticed moved quickly across the road heading west. What I saw was a very large animal that walked upright, but just slightly slumped forward as it moved. It did not run but took very long steps as it moved. As I passed where the animal had crossed I slowed down to look. I could not see anything. I believe the oncoming car also saw the animal as it braked when it went by the spot as well. The car did not brake because I had slowed down. Once the car had passed I decided to turn around and go back. I saw nothing else. It was dark that night with very little light from the moon the best that I can remember.

Physical evidence:
No evidence searched for that night.

Sounds:
None heard.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of incidents that allegedly occurred in Hunt County, Texas, near Commerce in August of 1977.

The witness had found the article on the NBC56 Tyler-Longview website about the 4 part segment they shot with us and aired in July-August of 2002; he contacted us after seeing this.

The witness stated that before the incident, he had no real opinion about whether or not bigfoot was a reality. Growing up in the area, he had heard rumors and stories in the area of "Wooly Booger Creek,? but he never seriously considered the possibility that there may have been truth behind them. After his visual encounter incident, he became convinced of the existence of the sasquatch.

The witness was very familiar with the area; he had grown up there. The site of the visual encounter is within 60 yards of the bridge over the Sulphur River; it is an unlit stretch of highway. The environment there consists of river bottoms, a flood plain when it rains, and otherwise moderately wooded pasture. To the best of the witness?s recollection, there were no cattle on the land, which is still the case today.

The incident was said to have occurred on a Friday night while the witness was driving home. It was very dark that night, as he recalled, with no moonlight. The witness remembered seeing something at the edge of the illumination of his low beam headlights. The lights from an oncoming vehicle illuminated the area as well. The witness remembered seeing an upright figure standing on the shoulder of the road, at the edge of the tree line. At first he thought it was a person, but then realized that it was too large. When he was about sixty yards away from the figure, it crossed the two lane road in three steps, at a very quick pace.

He only saw the silhouette of the subject, but did notice that ?it did not appear to be slick.? He observed the arms swinging as it crossed the road, as well as that it was "kinda hunched over." The witness only saw it for a couple of seconds as he passed. He stopped after passing the area where it crossed, and noticed the other vehicle did as well. The witness believed that the occupants of the other vehicle had witnessed it also.

At the time the witness?s windows were rolled up, so he did not notice if there were any sounds or odor from the subject.

The witness remembered turning his car around and returning to the point where he had seen the subject cross the highway. He swung his headlights out into the area where the subject seemed to be heading; he saw nothing unusual. At this point, he had his windows rolled down, but did not recall hearing or smelling anything out of the ordinary.

The witness remembered looking at a nearby road sign that was about 6 feet tall and realizing that the subject was at least 2
