Class 3a

Deer hunter reports lengthy encounter while hunting in a stand.

Report Details

Occurrence date: December/1998
Location: Trinity County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Onalaska
Time / Conditions: Mid-morning. — Wooded. From there to the east is nothing but miles and miles of heavy woods that no one hardly messes with. This large patch of woods can be seen on any map with Onalaska, Trinity, Groveton, Livingston, and I think Moscow circling it.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
While deer hunting in a box stand I saw movement to my right (south). I turned to look and prepared to shoot (at first I thought it was a deer). It moved again and I realized its distance and size. It was farther away and was much larger than I first thought. Its size is why I thought it was close to me. But when it moved again and I saw it, looking straight at it and not out of the corner of my eye, is when I knew it wasn't a deer. It reminded me of someone behind a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, standing on end, walking from tree to tree. The size was about the same though a little smaller I think.

I watched it for about an hour and it stayed at 75-100 yards away from me the whole time. It walked from one tree to another and some times I would lose sight of it as it would pass through small pine thickets. I could not judge its shape very well, due to the trees between me and it, but it was definitely walking upright. When it moved, it covered a lot of ground quickly. Possibly from a long stride, though it never seemed to be in a hurry. Its movements also appeared to be well thought out and deliberate as it moved from one semi-hiding place to another, like it was playing hide-and-seek.

At some of the trees where it stopped I could see it on both sides of the tree. I think now, how funny it was, like a woolly mammoth hiding behind a toothpick! It basically half-circled me in this time and stayed about the same distance all the while. I wish I would have had a scope on my gun to get a better look at this guy.

I don't know what it was that I saw but it must have known I was there. I don't know if I was in its path of travel and it just went around me or if it went around me out of its own curiosity. But it was very cautious of its distance and movements. It made no sounds nor did it move any brush or limbs as it moved. I think it knew very well of what it was doing but I don't think it knew that I could see it.

After it had covered the half-circle around me it just disappeared. Also, in the same area I use to find scrapes in pine trees that were about 6 feet off the ground and would be all the way around the tree. The trees would always be pines at about 6 to 8 inches in diameter and about 15 feet tall. The scraped area would be about 1 to 1 1/2 foot long up and down the tree. I've also seen these in Tyler County much more.

Physical evidence:
An hour or so afterwards I walked around to see if I could find any tracks or any sign of its passing but found nothing. At that time of the year the leaves are very deep and soft and don't show much as far as tracks.

Sounds:
Some time later, during the same winter, me and a friend of mine were in the same area at night and heard a loud gibbering sound. It was some distance away but I don't know how far but we heard it clearly for about 5 minutes. The sound seemed to carry some distance. The sound was deep in tone with a higher pitch to it every now and then. It was rapid like some one talking very fast. I know it wasn't coyotes or wolves yelping and the sound came from one animal only and not a group of animals. I have never heard anything like it before, nor afterwards.

Additional observations:
Its color was about the same as dried pine straw (reddish brown) but at times while in the shadows it looked black. I've seen deer do the same thing, look almost black in the shade and walk out into the sunlight and turn blondish brown. But for the most part a reddish brown in color, like pine straw. It was about 6 1/2 feet to 7 feet tall, very broad built and thick. Walking up-right and surefooted. Reddish brown in color.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Jerry Hestand

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Trinity County, Texas approximately one mile from Lake Livingston near Onalaska in December of 1998.

I interviewed the witness, who lives in Tyler County, at length on 3 June 2002. The witness told me how he was deer hunting in December of 1998. It was a clear, sunny day. The temperature was comfortable. He arrived at the area, which is densely wooded and thick with undergrowth, before dawn, but he did not go out to the hunting stand until mid-morning.

When he finally settled into the stand, he noticed something moving on his right. His first thought was that he was seeing a large white-tailed deer buck in the process of stepping out into a clear area. But after a few seconds, he realized he was not seeing a deer by the way it moved. It seemed to move quietly and deliberately from the witness?s right to his left, and crossing in front of him. The witness estimated the distance to be 75-100 yards.

The witness said that he watched the subject for an hour. He described the subject as reddish-brown in color. He remembered that the color was similar to that of pine straw. He estimated the height of the subject to be approximately 6 1/2 to 7 feet tall. While the subject was moving from one side of the witness to the other, it apparently did so without making any sound that was detectable by the witness. There was no wind.

The submitted incident report from this witness is very detailed in description. During the interview, the witness described the incident in the same way. The witness described the overall size of the subject as being similar to a piece of plywood that is 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall. The witness recalled no separation between the legs or arms.

The witness indicated that the subject crossed in front of him, and to his left; the subject was in view of the witness for about an hour. It seemed to be moving slowly and deliberately from tree to tree. The witness was certain that the subject knew he was there.

Finally, the witness simply lost sight of the subject as it moved away from him and into the deeper woods.

Later in the same winter, the witness and a friend were at the same location around 4:00 AM. Soon after arriving, they both heard vocalizations consisting of low tones and lasting for five minutes. The witness described other vocalizations in addition to the low tones that to him sounded similar to some sort of human ?gibberish,? or nonsensical human sounds.
