Report Details

Occurrence date: Summer/1976
Location: Upshur County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Diana
Time / Conditions: 7:30 - 8:00 pm. — Wooded pastureland.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
It's been nearly 30 yrs ago. My experience took place in the summer of 1976. Too long ago to remember the month. My husband and I were going to the Lake O' The Pines for the weekend. We were meeting friends, as we often did. It was late in the afternoon, but not yet dark. I would say it was 7:30 or 8:00. In the summer it didn't get dark till 9:30. On the side of the road on a hill along a fence row is where I saw it. Maybe 10 or 15 ft away. It was squatted down (like a human would) next to a fence post. I remember how big it was. Even squatted down it was as tall or taller than the fence post. It really shook me up. I ask my husband DID YOU SEE THAT? We were pulling a boat and his eyes had been on the road so he missed it. When we got to the lake I told everyone I had just seen Bigfoot. A lady friend of mine said she had seen one also in that area while hunting. She said she had it in her gun scope, but was afraid to shoot it. We both wrote down what we had seen, color and all and compared notes. Hers was just like mine. We both had seen large brownish animals. I know bears and this was no bear.

Additional observations:
It was very large, brownish & furry. Looked just like the pictures of Bigfoot I've seen.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of an alleged sighting of a bigfoot that occurred in Upshur County, Texas near Little Cypress Bayou and Lake o? the Pines, in the summer of 1976.

I interviewed the witness on 17 February 2003. The incident reportedly occurred on a Friday evening in the summer of 1976. The witness and her family (husband & 7 year-old daughter) were heading to Lake o' The Pines for a weekend outing.

The witness recalled that the family was heading east on Highway 154. The witness remembered how she noticed a large hair-covered animal of some sort squatting down next to a fence row. She remembered it being taller than the fence post. The area beyond the fence was wooded, with no houses around. The subject was facing in their direction of travel, which was east. The figure was positioned on the passenger side of the vehicle so that the witness, who was in the front passenger seat, had a fairly clear view of it. The witness distinctly recalled that as she and her family passed the subject, it turned its head and faced her, and she had the impression that it looked directly into her eyes. The only movement detected by the witness was the movement of the head. She only saw it for a few seconds before they passed it.

The witness described the subject as being covered with reddish-black hair. The face did not appear to have hair on it. She indicated that the skin on the face was smooth and dark. The eyes were also dark.

The witness was immediately certain that she had seen a bigfoot. She told her family and told others that she had seen a bigfoot when the family reached their destination. The witness's daughter, who was seven years old at the time of the incident, also said that she saw the subject stand up and run off as they passed, but I was not able to directly interview her.
