Report Details

Occurrence date: September/1980
Location: Travis County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Spicewood
Time / Conditions: 8:30 PM — This area was all cliffs and woods. There were no houses in the area, but there were some large goat and cattle ranches.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
My friend and I were out on Old Ferry Road near Paleface Park. My buddy, who is still my best friend, saw something big and hairy trotting upright on two legs, crossing the road ahead of us. We were parked on the side of the road. He instantly locked both doors. I saw the object from behind, moving through the brush.

This object was about 75 yards ahead of us at dusk. This scared us so bad that we went straight home.

We talked to a Travis County Sheriff several days later, and he reported seeing a bear. What we saw was not a bear, it was trotting on two legs.

Physical evidence:
None was found.

Sounds:
We did not hear or smell anything due to the fact we were in the car, but it sure scared the daylights out of us. We often fished the Pedernales River at night, and have heard lots of unexplained howls and screams that would make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

Additional observations:
Between 6 & 7 feet tall and brownish in color.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Travis County, Texas in September 1980.

I interviewed the witness at length. He stated that he was 17 at the time of the incident. He claimed to have had a great deal of experience with the outdoors in the area, and was a trapper for predator hides. He did not know if it was relevant, but he did make me aware that many of his large traps for cougars had had the bait cages (smaller metal cages for a chicken to sit in as predator bait) torn apart but no predator was ever caught in the large traps.

The witness claimed that he and his friend were going to shoot target practice at a deserted area on Old Ferry Road near Paleface Park and the Peggy Ranch. The two young men were in the vehicle getting their weapons ready, when his friend suddenly reached across and locked both doors. The witness remembered that at that time his friend said: "Look at that." The witness looked up saw a brown hairy figure with its backside to the men trotting away upright; the witness estimated that the distance was somewhere between 75 and 100 yards away. The witness recalled that the subject was moving rather briskly. He estimated the subject?s height as easily 6 - 8 feet tall. The witness remembered that he and his friend were scared because they did not know what they were seeing; it was bipedal. Also, its size was unlike any other animal known in the region.

The witness and his friend left the area and summoned the friend?s grandfather; the grandfather, who was supposedly an experienced tracker, wanted to immediately go to the area. The witness explained that while he and his friend were just too afraid at the time, they did return several days later to look for tracks. They found none.

The witness recalled that the two young men talked with the sheriff who claimed to have seen a bear. The witness adamantly stated that what he and his friend saw was absolutely not a bear; what they saw was clearly upright, covered with hair, large and was ?trotting on two feet.?

The area today has been developed considerably; when the incident allegedly took place, it was rural, wooded and undeveloped.

I was not able to interview the second witness in depth, but he did acknowledge and confirm that the event occurred.
