Case: 01050029

Class 1d

Three bikers returning from Mexico have strange road encounter near Muleshoe Wildlife Refuge.

Report Details

Occurrence date: November/2001
Location: Bailey County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Circle Back
Time / Conditions: Late at night — This is all farmland and pasture land.
# of Witnesses: 3

Witness Account:
Three of us were returning on a road trip late at night. I was number two in a line of three. It was a cool night with a high level light fog that was above our heads four or five feet. It wasn't a solid fog but patchy every now and then. The animal was on the side of the road crossing the ditch south to north and was about to cross my path. It stopped as I swerved to miss it and as I looked behind me the number three rider had to drive way around because it had stepped into the road. We stopped to verify with each other what we had just seen. Our stories were the same and being late at night and very dark we decided to get the hell out of there. In hindsight we should have gone and looked for evidence of the animal.

Physical evidence:
No, it rained later and when we went a day later we couldn't find anything. There was an odor but it could have been from feedlots that are in the area.

Additional observations:
It was about seven feet tall and white. The rider behind me saw facial features. It was standing upright and seemed to have red eyes. This could have been because of the headlights reflecting out of the eyes like a deer or other animal that you see at night. It had long arms and was tall!

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Daryl Colyer

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Bailey County, Texas in November 2001.

The primary witness contacted us after reading the article in the October 2005 issue of Texas Highways magazine. This sighting report is atypical, largely because of the location of the encounter; Bailey County is located on the high plains of West Texas and is far and away from what we normally would consider to be probable habitat. For the most part, the terrain is open, expansive and largely devoid of any cover; the county is remotely populated and is mostly comprised of large ranches. That being said, the 5,809 acre Muleshoe Wildlife Refuge, the oldest wildlife refuge in Texas, is only a few miles away from the sighting area.

Even in consideration of the above information, after talking directly with all three men who were involved in the encounter, my conclusion is that the men indeed encountered something for which they had no explanation. None of the men indicated to me that they were certain that what they encountered was a bigfoot, but they certainly offered no other reasonable alternative.

The first man in the small convoy of motorcycles witnessed nothing unusual; he was perhaps one quarter of a mile in the lead as the group passed through the area. The second man remembered seeing something in a split second that was "a good size," (at least as tall and large as a big man) and "wasn't a man but was upright on two legs." Further, he recalled the figure as being "white and furry, or hairy." He did not recall seeing a face or any other bodily detail. The figure was darting from the ditch right into the highway as the second man passed it. The witness said that it very much startled him, and that he passed it very quickly. As he passed it, and immediately afterward, the witness absolutely had no idea what it was. The subject's appearance and stature defied all mental images of any animals with whom the witness was familiar; he was quite puzzled what he had just encountered. After he thought about it, the witness began to wonder if he had seen a "yeti."

The third man in the convoy was only a short distance behind the second man and saw him aggressively swerve in the road to miss a figure that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. The third man also had to swerve to miss what was now passively standing in the road and watching him as he quickly drove by at perhaps 60 miles per hour. The witness described the subject in much the same way as the second man. He could not remember great details, but did remark that he caught a very quick glimpse of a face (and eyes), arms and legs. The subject merely watched as the witness passed it. The third man indicated that it was absolutely at least six feet in height and perhaps even taller as it seemed to tower over him as he passed it on the highway. The third man had no explanation for what he and his friend saw. He still can offer no explanation; he only knows that what he saw was large, upright, bipedal, white, covered with hair and behaved not as a human, but as an animal. The men told me that they immediately and independently knew that what they saw was not human, nor was it a cow or sheepdog or any other known animal that would commonly be found in the area.

The first man in the convoy did not witness anything unusual, but he did recall the behavior of the other two men when they regrouped farther down the road. He was quite convinced that the other two men had seen something very unusual. He described them as being "scared," and it was not his impression in the least that the other two were conspiring to perpetrate the incident. His wife, upon learning of the incident, attempted to pass off the sighting as "swirling fog." However, both witnesses were quite adamant that what they saw was animated and very much alive.

It is also worth noting that there have been quite a few reports in Northwest Texas and Central Oklahoma of encounters with a white sasquatch spanning thirty years beginning with sightings of "The Lake Worth Monster." Thirty years is certainly within what is widely considered to be a possible lifespan of the great apes; it does not seem out of the question that an individual white sasquatch, or his/her progeny may have been spotted through the years in the area.
