Woman taking a walk has startling encounter near the Sulphur River.

Report Details

Occurrence date: October/1984
Location: Bowie County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Simms
Time / Conditions: Near Dusk — Slightly foggy and overcast. Wooded, basic homesteads. Small acre farms. Horses and cows nearby.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I was walking down a dirt road near dusk. It had rained that day and it was an overcast sky grey and white. There was a misty fog, but not a heavy fog. It was very quiet and I remember looking down as I was walking and hearing my footsteps. I went around a curve where there were several horses grazing in a pasture. As I came around the curve I began to walk down a straightaway where the road crossed over a small creek. Right as I came upon the creek, I was startled by something to my left. I heard a sound, kind of like small branches and leaves being stepped on, and at the same time I smelled something that was unfamiliar to me. It was not an overpowering stench, but it did smell bad like a wet animal or something. I looked to my left and was frozen by what I saw. I saw a figure standing right at the edge of the creek and it was looking back at me. For a moment it seemed we were both frozen. I have never been as scared as I was in that moment. I remember it being very tall, around 7 feet high, and it was covered with black hair, the entire body. Its arms were long and hung down close to the knees but not all the way. I could not see any ears and because of the mist I could not clearly see its face. But everything was so still and quiet that day, I remember seeing it breathe. It was completely motionless except for the slight movement as it breathed in and out, and that is what frightened me so very bad, because I knew that it was real and I was not just seeing something among the trees. I turned and ran as fast as I could back home. I never looked back to see if it ran, or if it was following me.

Sounds:
Yes. Besides the occasional panther screams, and basic forest creature sounds, there have been odd howls or sounds heard by locals, although seldom.

Additional observations:
Had been heard and seen around the Anderson Creek bottoms east of Simms, off of Hwy 67, in the early 1940s and then tracks seen at a farmer's well, in the later 1940s. It had apparently drawn a bucket of water.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Charles DeVore

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Bowie County, Texas near the Sulphur River in 1984.

I interviewed the witness along with her husband; she was 23 years old at the time of the incident. While the witness's report is very detailed, we were able to come up with some additional information during the interview.

The witness and her family were visiting some friends who lived in a rural area of Bowie County. The witness broke away from the others to take a late afternoon walk down a gravel road; she was enjoying the scenery.

Upon crossing a bridge over a small creek, the witness noticed some slight noise combined with an unfamiliar smell. Then she was extremely startled to see a large hair-covered figure standing at the edge of creek no more than about 10 to 12 feet away.

The witness remembered that the subject was standing in a slightly stooped posture with its arms at its sides while it stood there staring at the witness. The witness estimated the height of the subject to be around seven feet. One of the most memorable details for the witness was that she could recall how she could visibly see the subject move as it breathed.

The witness recalled how terrified she felt when it actually dawned on her that what she was seeing was in fact real; when she detected its breathing movement, somehow the situation became very real to her. She now realized how she was seeing something that was not supposed to exist.

The witness told me that at that point, she quickly turned and ran back to her friends? house; she had not stayed long enough to study its facial features. She did not want to return to the scene to look for evidence nor did anyone else of her family or friends.

The witness and her husband have been to the area many times since to relive the experience but have not had any further encounters.

Location: The site was on a small creek that flows into Anderson Creek about 3/4 mile east. Anderson Creek is a major tributary flowing from DeKalb, Texas into the Sulphur River and headwaters of Wright Patman Lake. Location is approximately 7 miles northwest from entry into Wright Patman Lake.
