Case: 01050040

Class 3a

Teen girl has extraordinarily close encounter while walking home in early morning hours.

Report Details

Occurrence date: Winter/1986 or 1987
Location: Harris County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Spring
Time / Conditions: Between 2:30 and 3:00 am — Wooded, at the time I lived near horses, ducks, cows, goats and such.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I was walking home along a fence line behind my house between 2:30 and 3:00am and heard leaves moving like someone was walking near by. Then something hurdled the fence and landed in front of me. The fence was about 5 feet tall and this creature had just grabbed the top of the fence and threw its legs to one side and over the fence. When it landed, it landed low and when it stood up right it was about 7ft tall and was totally black (I could not make out any of its features and did not look as if it was wearing clothes - it looked as if it had dark hair all over its body) standing about 5 feet from me. We looked at each other for about 3 seconds and then it turned and kind of leaned over or forward and took off. I could hear branches breaking as it went threw the woods. I was so scared that I could not move for about 45 minutes. Then a week later my mother told me that she had seen something similar coming home late one night the following week. She said that while driving home a big creature walked out in front of her car holding a possible dead deer in its arms. It walked out in front of her while she was driving and just up the road from the house. She said that it looked at her and kept walking. It crossed the road, crossed the ditch and then stepped over the 3 foot barb-wired fence. We still talk about this and wonder what the heck was it.

Sounds:
This was very strange that I heard the leaves moving and no dogs were barking near by because normally if there is any noise near by all the dogs around will bark. However it was very quiet.

Additional observations:
About 7ft tall and was totally black (I could not make out any of its features and did not look as if it was wearing clothes - it looked as if it had dark hair all over its body.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Walter Blake

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in northeast Harris County, Texas, just south of the Montgomery County line, in 1986 or 1987.

After hearing the witness of this encounter recount the incident at a recent NAWAC meeting, I was very much interested in further interviewing her regarding the particulars of the experience.

The witness reported that she was in her late teens when the event occurred on a dead end road between Spring, and Kingwood, Texas. The location is immediately south of the Harris County and Montgomery County line very near the confluence of two major watercourses in the area; Spring Creek and the San Jacinto River. There are scattered swamps, marshes and ponds in the area. Interestingly, there is a major outdoor shooting range within two miles of the location. The home is not in a subdivision proper but there are some neighboring homeowners on the small acreage tracts. There have been numerous historical accounts of encounters within a 25-mile radius of this site as well as some recent reports very nearby.

It was the winter of 1986 or 1987 as the witness recalled, and it was a cold night with either strong filtered starlight or a bright moon. As the witness was, in her own words, sneaking back into her home after a night out talking with friends, she was approaching the back fence of her home at 3:00am when she heard what she thought was her father stepping in the leaves and approaching the wooden topped fence. She was very surprised that instead of it being her father catching her sneaking out, a large dark figure gracefully swung itself over the fence. It grabbed the top of the fence with both hands and swung both legs over by keeping them to one side of its body. After landing within three feet of the witness it slowly started to stand up. The two looked at each other at extremely close range as it continued to straighten until it towered over the witness. At full extension its height was at least two feet higher than the five feet tall fence making it around seven feet tall. After three to five seconds, the figure quickly turned, then very deliberately and quickly walked off on two legs into the dense brush that bordered the area that had been cleared to build and maintain the fence. The witness heard branches breaking and brush rustling for 5 to 10 seconds thereafter and then silence. The general direction of travel was to the west toward an undeveloped area that contains a small pond.

The witness related to me that she then could not move for a good while and ultimately sat down to have a self-discussion as to what had just occurred. She subconsciously ruled out any known animals and as the realization of what it had to have been sunk in she remained seated near the fence in total disbelief. She reports that there was no sound other than footfalls, the sound of it landing in the leaves after scaling the fence and branches breaking as it was going away. Unfortunately the witness was never able to make out any facial features. There was no odor that she can remember. There was only the hint of exaggerated arm swing as it lifted its arms to start walking away but the distance to the brush was too short for any complete observation of such movement.

The witness stated that she did not tell anyone else about the incident until approximately one week later when her mother told her of her own nearby encounter with a similar creature while returning home from school one night. She was able to then relate the events of her encounter to her mother without fear of ridicule. I hope to interview the mother soon.

Unlike many witnesses, this particular individual looks back on her encounter with awe. She described it as a wonderful experience and expressed to me the desire to see the animal again but for a longer duration and under better conditions. She seemed somewhat envious of the encounter that was related to her by her mother. She did however express some feelings of exhilaration while relating her encounter to me, interrupting the interview on at least two occasions to tell me of the goose bumps she was experiencing from the telling. I surmise that the witness indeed believes that she saw a sasquatch that winter night of her youth. I find little inconsistency in her recounting and her demeanor is nothing less than sincere, compelling and persuasive.
