Investigator's Comments

Mike Mayes

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Liberty County, Texas, in March of 2006.

I was able to talk at length with the witness and the property owners about the reported incident. Although the initial report was somewhat short on detail, during the interview, I was able to glean much detail and information from the witness.

The witness and his family were visiting friends on their property near Tarkington on Saturday March 4, 2006. The witness and his family visit regularly (approximately every other week). The witness and his two young sons (5 yrs. and 3 yrs.) went for a four wheeler ride around toward the back of the property. The youngest son was sitting in front of him while the older boy was sitting behind him. The witness stopped his four wheeler to readjust his youngest son who was sitting in front of him on the four wheeler. While doing so, he noticed movement near a downed tree about 70 yards away. The witness stated that he observed a dark brown to black animal sitting or stooping near the base of the downed tree. The subject seemed to become aware of the presence of the witness and stood upright. The witness looked down briefly to tend to his youngest son and when he looked back up the subject had moved and was now only about 30 yards away and striding closer. The witness immediately gunned the four wheeler and left the area. The witness did note that he had smelled a very strong odor (wet dog/hog) just before he spotted the subject.

The witness has lived in Texas for only four years or so. He is originally from Nova Scotia and has been hunting for at least 25 years. He is very familiar with bear from his days living and hunting up North and is positive that what he saw was not a bear. He specifically noted that there was no snout like a bear and that the subject walked too steadily and quickly on two legs to be a bear.

The subject in question was a dark brown to black color. It was hunched down or sitting near the exposed roots of a downed tree when first observed. There was water pooled up in the depression left by the uprooted tree. The witness speculated that the subject might have been drinking from this water. It stood when it realized it was being watched. It then began walking toward the witness and actually closed to within 30 yards or so before the witness left the area. The subject was described as being between 5-6 feet tall, very broad at the shoulder and through the chest area, and very hairy. No real details could be given on facial features.

The subject was observed near the back of a 20 acre wooded piece of property well away from the house near a downed tree (presumably felled by Hurricane Rita). Immediately behind the property is a pipeline cut. The pipeline backs up to another 800-900 acres of wooded land. There is at least one pond/stock tank on the property. There are numerous stock tanks in the immediate vicinity as well as Tarkington Bayou. To the best of the knowledge of the property owners there are no caves, mines, gravel pits, etc. in the immediate vicinity. There is an abandoned house on the adjacent property.

The nearest town would be Dayton.

The sighting reportedly occurred between 5:15 - 6:00 p.m. Dusk was approaching but the visibility was still good. It was warm and clear.

The property owners are not aware of any other incidents in the area. The witness did say that he has spooked something big 5-6 times when in a certain remote portion of the property. He has heard it moving through the brush but had never seen anything until this incident.

Both the property owners and the witness were extremely open and cooperative. Both parties have agreed to allow NAWAC members to come and visit the property to see the actual location of the encounter. A date in the very near future has been set but needs to be finalized with the witness later this week. The witness is certain that what he saw was not a bear or any other known animal. He said he has never seen anything like it.

He feels it was a sasquatch mainly because he doesn't know what else it could be. He is anxious to get back out to the property in an attempt to see the animal again.

Addendum, 18 March 2006:

John Dickey and I visited the site of this latest Liberty County reported bigfoot sighting near Tarkington on 18 March 2006, Saturday. We met the entire family of both the property owners and the witness. They gave us a warm welcome and were eager to discuss what had happened. They had many questions which John and I answered as best we could. While we knew the family had not owned the property for very long, we found out that the land had been completely unoccupied for several years prior to their arrival.

The sighting reportedly took place off the property owned by the family across the pipeline mentioned in my previous report. John Dickey and I estimated the site to be about a mile or mile and a half from the actual home in a very remote and heavily wooded area.

The witness led us to the site of the reported sighting. Just as he had described, there was a large downed tree with the root ball exposed which made a depression in the ground. This is the area where the subject was allegedly seen in a hunched down position. As we approached the site we became aware that this downed tree actually formed the main support for what we believe may be some sort of nest/den structure. There were numerous limb breaks in the immediate area and branches laid across and over the top of the downed tree forming a large covered area. The interior of this structure would easily hold 5-6 adult humans in a sitting position. There was about 4.5 feet of clearance on the inside of the structure.

We searched for trace evidence, but hogs had been at the site very recently and really rooted up the ground in and around the nest-like structure. Any evidence that might have been there at one time was gone by the time we were able to view the site. It appeared that the nest-like structure showed no signs of use by anything other than hogs.

The witness has become even more credible in my mind after visiting the site. The witness initially speculated the subject had been getting a drink from the water pooled at the base of the downed tree. After seeing the site, my conclusion is that it is possible that the witness may have stumbled onto the subject-animal "at home."

Dickey and I could find no absolute sign of a sasquatch's presence, although we both agreed that the area appears as ideal habitat, with hundreds of heavily-wooded acres and abundant food and water sources. Not to mention that Liberty County is one of the leading counties in Texas for reported bigfoot sightings.
