Case: 04080011

Class 3c

Two brothers are charged by a large, unseen animal while fishing.

Report Details

Occurrence date: July/1966
Location: Grant Parish County, LA
Nearby/Vicinity: Rock Hill
Time / Conditions: 15:00 — Mid-afternoon, clear & hot.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
My brother and myself were going fishing on Hudson creek, as we did often, while out of school for the summer. We had just reached the creek, about a half mile off of the road, when we heard a bellowing-shrilling yell, which scared the bejesus out of us. We dropped our fishing poles and just ran as fast as we could, all the way back home, about three-fourths of a mile. As we neared the house we yelled out to the older brother and his buddies who were there visiting. They asked us what in the world was wrong with us, we told them what had happened. Of course they did not believe us, but we must have put so kind of fear in them, we all went back to the site with our shot guns. As we neared the site again we heard a shrilling noise and this time a sound like a hundred cattle were coming at us. Well, I looked at one of my brothers, then at the other, then back at the other, and he was gone. He ran back the way we had come from, and all of us followed. When our hearts had started beating again, we were all hip deep in the creek, holding our guns up above our heads, so they would not get wet. One of us said, "What are we running from?" Another one said "I don't know, but let's get the heck out of here." We never spoke another word of it to each other. I only started telling the story to my kids years later. The thing about the incident that sticks out is - there were no cattle in those woods, so we had no explanation for what we heard. Also a couple of years earlier, my younger brother claims to have seen a small black bear in the same woods while hunting alone. Could this have been a young Bigfoot? As there were never any sightings of black bear in that area.

Physical evidence:
No, we never looked for any. I now wish we had.

Hand/foot prints:
N/A

Sounds:
We heard a bellowing-shrilling yell, also a shrilling noise and this time a sound like a hundred cattle were coming at us.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Charles DeVore

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Grant Parish, Louisiana, in 1966.

I interviewed the witness 21 February 2005 and found him very credible and comfortable with answering all my questions.

While I am not aware of any other sighting reports in Grant Parish, there are quite a few reported bigfoot sightings from adjacent Rapides Parish starting only a couple miles south of this location. Location is approximately 6 miles north of Alexandria. There is also one other report from Grant Parish, investigated by Scott Kessler, of purported sasquatch tracks found by a Forest Service surveyor in 1996.

The witness was 16 years old at the time and all the other boys were in that same neighborhood of age. They were all sober and drug free; they were raised as hunters.

The witness indicated that when he and the others returned to the location about 10 to 15 minutes later, they were met with a terrible bellowing noise that tapered to a high pitched scream along with something charging through the underbrush towards them. They had no idea what it could be and were terrified at the sounds which consisted of a bellowing scream and brush and limbs breaks. The witness believed that running was the only logical thing to do.

The witness stated that this event had a profound effect on him and while this was his favorite fishing place, he never returned to that spot.

Only recently has the witness learned of how the sasquatch has been reputed to make bluff charges like a gorilla; the witness is now convinced that it could have been a bigfoot. During all his outdoors experiences since then, he has never heard that noise again. It should be noted that it was a bluff charge as the subject did not expose itself when the boys halted in the creek.
