Case: 04080027

Class 3a

Three boys have encounter outside friend's house.

Report Details

Occurrence date: June/1988
Location: Vernon Parish County, LA
Nearby/Vicinity: Leesville
Time / Conditions: 19:00 — unknown
# of Witnesses: 3

Witness Account:
My friends and I were out being bored and just hanging out during summer school vacation. When my friend came up with the idea to scare my other friend who lived down the street. So we walked on down to his house and climbed his fence and then went around to his bedroom window. We were going to bang on the glass hard and scare him. But when we looked into his room he had just walked out his door. So we were all looking in the window. He must have seen some movement out of the corner of his eye and it caught his attention. Then I heard my friend yell to look. This time we both looked at what he had been watching and my mouth dropped, my hair stood up and I just stared. It was standing there looking at us for less than a second and then it turned and started to walk away. Then it stopped, took about 3 or 4 steps and then turned around again and it made a growl twice at us. My friends took off and I was right behind them. I jumped the fence with one hand and ripped my pants coming over it and ran until we were out of breath.

Physical evidence:
We did get the nerve to go back the next day in the afternoon after a lot of convincing that it was gone. On the ground were it had turned the first time near the fence were we had first seen it, the pine straw and grass had been ripped up.

Hand/foot prints:
None noted

Sounds:
A loud and deep groan but almost like a scream too, scary. I still get goose bumps when I think about it.

Additional observations:
6 1/2 to 7 foot tall ape like thing. It had long grayish brown hair and it walked like us, human like, but hunched over a little. It walked kind of fast. I guess I was too busy freaking out after it growled at me and my friends. I do remember that I think it seemed afraid of us.
I guess the wind was blowing to the side of us because not one of us smelled anything that stunk.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Charles DeVore

This report was published as a result of an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, in June of 1988.

I interviewed the witness 21 August 2003. He is a 30-year-old avid bowhunter who has been living in the Leesville area all his life and is very knowledgeable of the outdoors. He has encountered wildlife of all kinds and was certain that this sighting was no known animal to him. The witness was sixteen years old at time of the encounter and the oldest of the three boys involved. The witness seemed open and truthful; my impression is that he was a very reliable observer despite his young age and the passage of time since the event.

Approximately two miles east from center of Leesville is where the incident was said to have happened. Area is crisscrossed with many creeks all joining the major waterway of Bayou Castor. There were woods just at the back of the house and a row of blackberry vines running along the fence line.

At sundown, the three boys approached their friend's house quietly with the intention of banging on their friend's bedroom window to scare him. Noticing their friend leave the room as they arrived, they were just standing there when one of the boys noticed movement of something that scared him. It was about 35 feet away on the far side of the blackberry fence. They all looked and saw the subject. The subject, apparently hearing them for the first time, looked at them and stood up on two legs. It had the appearance of an ape about six and one-half to seven feet tall. The color of the hair was grayish brown but could have been different due to the setting of the sun. The subject quickly spun around and walked about four steps away towards the woods but stopped, turned its whole body towards them and let out two deep moaning-growling-screaming vocalizations that sent the boys running.

Working up enough bravery to return the next day, the boys searched the blackberry fence area. All they found was torn or twisted grass where they assumed the subject had spun around; there were lots of blackberries on the ground.

The witness has been an avid hunter in the region all his life and never has seen anything else like this and has never heard the same sound that it made. The witness has had a renewed interest in bigfoot after thinking back about the event with one of the other witnesses who also still lives in the area.
