Class 3a

After working swing shift, supervisor has visual encounter just east of Trinity River on Highway 787 near Rye.

Report Details

Occurrence date: December/2007
Location: Liberty County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Rye
Time / Conditions: 1:34 AM — Quarter moon, cool, dark, very light fog. There was old clearcut forest on the left side, forest on the right with a tram. road. A gate was on the left side. Just east of the Trinity River.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I was coming home from work and was on hwy 787 between Romayor and Rye, Texas. There was a curve in the road, two small houses on the left side and after the houses another curve. The road then goes straight for a little ways. I had just looked at the clock on the radio and it was 1:34 am. I was going about 55 mph and I saw something on the right side of the road. This tall thing crossed in front of my car. It was quick when it crossed the road and when it got on the left side where there was a dirt road I saw a distinctive leg and arm moving back like someone does when they are running. There was an iron pipe gate on the dirt road and the road goes into a clearcut forest. It had long reddish brown hair and was about 6-7 feet tall.

Hand/foot prints:
I did not stop to check it out.

Sounds:
No sounds heard. I was driving down 787 approaching Rye from Romayor.

Additional observations:
Back in August I saw something in the same area one morning that crossed the road between me and a big truck but I didn't get a good look at it. The truck driver did because he was hanging out the window looking at it after it crossed. What I saw was not clear but it reminded me of a big musk ox because it had a lot of hair and was big.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Daryl Colyer

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Liberty County, Texas, near Rye, in December 2007.

I interviewed the witness in February 2008. I found him candid and frank during the interview and he showed no reluctance to discuss the incident with me. He is a supervisor for a company in the Southeast Texas area and sometimes works different shifts.

I asked him to take me through the facts as he recalled them of that early morning incident and he had no problems doing so.

He explained how he was driving home, approximately 1:30 a.m., after he had gotten off work when he saw something that at first he could not believe.

He offered the following additional details that were not provided in his intitial report:

He first saw eye shine on the side of the highway at perhaps 80 or so yards in front of him. He immediately thought it might be a deer. He automatically slowed down because he had previously hit two deer. He described the eye shine as looking exactly like that of a deer.

As he approached the subject and reached a distance of perhaps 30 - 40 yards, it darted out across the highway, moving very quickly, but it was upright. The witness remembered thinking, "No it can't be..."

The witness said the clearest look that he got was when the subject left the pavement and entered the dirt area just to the left of the road. The witness said at that time he saw an arm and leg with long reddish-brown hair and the subject was clearly upright. At that moment, the witness hit his brakes but decided to keep going, as it began to sink in that he was seeing something highly unusual. He was alone, it was dark, and what he had just seen seemed not much shorter than the roadsign in the area.

The witness did not see a face, but he saw the shape, posture, hair, arm and legs. As mentioned earlier, he did see eye shine from farther away before the subject ventured out onto the highway. The witness postulated that the subject had come from a trail on the right through the woods and was crossing to a dirt road with a gate that went through the clear cut area to his left.

The witness was stunned. The next day he drove back through the area and again wanted to stop, but determined that it was private property on both sides of the highway.

The witness mentioned that he told his wife and son and really did not get much of a reaction from them. He said he told a few people at work, and to his surprise, he did not receive any ridicule. In fact, the few co-workers that he told had their own stories to tell.

The witness told of how he may have seen something similar back in August at about 9:00 a.m. in the same area. He was traveling east again and from the opposite direction a logging truck was approaching. The witness stated that something large and hairy ran out into the road just in front of the logging truck, barely avoiding it; the big truck had to swerve to miss it. The witness said he was too far away to get a good look at it at that time, but he assured me that, "the truckdriver durn sure got a good look at it, because he was hanging out the window looking at it." The witness said that what he saw that time reminded him of a musk ox; he could not discern whether it was on two legs and was upright or not, but he now suspects that it was.
