Class 3a

Squirrel hunter reports morning encounter in Big Thicket National Preserve.

Report Details

Occurrence date: November/2004
Location: Hardin County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Lakeview
Time / Conditions: 07:15 AM, dry and clear.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
Me and my son had gone hunting that morning, he was hunting for wood ducks. I told him while he hunted, I would go back in the woods to hunt for deer. I walked down a dry creek bed a hundred yards are so and proceeded to go into the woods to sit by a tree. As I was walking into the thicket something made a noise almost like a low whistle. I thought I might be walking upon a hunter so I slowly backed out and dropped back into the dry creek bed. When I did this I turned around to see if I could spot the hunter. As I was looking I saw something I thought was waving at me, but then I saw that it wasn?t waving it was grabbing a branch to stand up. When it did it stood up and I thought first that it was a man hunting in a gillie suit. This thing proceeded to walk off and I could see its arms swinging and could see no gun. Me not believing in bigfoot, I went back to where my son was and told him there was a man in a gillie suit out there. We finished hunting that day and never heard a boat or saw anyone else out there.

Two months before this we were squirrel hunting about a mile from this same spot and something came screaming at us through the woods. I had never heard anything like this before. We both had shotguns and were still backing up. It sounded like King Kong coming through the woods.

Soon after I watched a documentary on bigfoot. That?s when I really started realizing it was bigfoot I saw in the woods.

Hand/foot prints:
Did not look but there are always prints that I thought were other hunters around there.

Sounds:
It was like a flat low whistle noise of the same pitch. The other time was a blood curdling roar.

Additional observations:
I would guess it to be around six and a half feet tall and a lot hairier than most of the pictures I have seen. It was dark in the woods but it also looked to be kind of matted with mud. I never smelt it or saw a face as it was walking kind of parallel and away from me.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Mike Mayes

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Hardin County, Texas in 2004.

I interviewed the witness on 5 July 2007. He was cordial, open and more than willing to discuss the two separate Southeast Texas incidents as mentioned in his report; my impression was that he was telling the truth.

The first incident reportedly occurred while the witness was out squirrel hunting with his son near the Neches River in Southeast Texas, eastern Hardin County in the Big Thicket National Preserve. The witness recalled that while hunting, the pair heard a series of "loud screams." He remembered each vocalization as lasting 5 - 6 seconds in duration with a pause of 10 - 15 seconds in between. Whatever was vocalizing seemed to get closer to the two hunters with each vocalization. The two, despite being armed with loaded shotguns, began to move away from the direction of the vocalizations. However, it continued to get closer and continue to vocalize. The witness remembered that he and his son could hear what sounded like a large animal crashing through the brush, continually advancing toward them. The witness described the crashing as: "what it would sound like if King Kong was coming through the woods." The witness estimated that whatever it was got to within 15 - 20 yards of them. It never revealed itself but began shaking trees and continued to "scream" at the men. The unseen animal then apparently retreated; the next time the men heard the vocalizations, they sounded farther away. The witness commented that it was odd that they heard so much crashing of brush as it approached but nothing as it retreated. The animal vocalized several more times and seemed to get farther away from the pair each time. The two never were able to visually identify what had approached them. The witness and his son had hunted this area for years and according to the witness, they had never heard anything like what they heard that day.

The second incident occurred within a mile of the first encounter about two months later. The witness and his son were again hunting. The son wanted to go duck-hunting so the father set him up in a pop-up blind near the water. The witness then left him to walk up a dry creek bed in the hopes of taking a deer. He estimated that he walked up about 100 yards from where he had left his son. He hopped out of the creek bed and walked about 10 - 15 yards into the woods. The witness then a heard a long whistle that stopped him in his tracks. His first thought was that he was walking up on another hunter. He turned and retreated to the creek bed and turned to see if he could make out the hunter in the woods. It was at this time that he thought he saw someone waving to him about 40 yards away. The witness indicated that what he mistook initially for a wave was actually a large arm reaching up to grab a tree branch. The subject then lifted itself up to its feet and walked away at about a 100-degree angle from the witness. The witness at first assumed that he was seeing a another hunter in a ghillie suit walking away. The witness described the subject as somewhere between six and seven feet tall, dark, and ?muddy? looking. The witness recalled clearly seeing the arms move back and forth as the subject walked.

As the witness recalled, he then returned to where his son was duck-hunting and told him that there was somebody out there in a weird looking ghillie suit. The witness then was reminded by his son that a hunter would likely be wearing some orange (required on Big Thicket National Preserve) and not a ghillie suit. At that time the witness realized that what he had seen had not been carrying a gun as a hunter would.

The area where both incidents took place is accessible only by boat. The witness claims there were no other boats near the scene of either incident nor were there other trucks or trailers at the boat ramp where he put in with his boat.

The witness remained pretty confused about both incidents for quite a while. He then happened to hear a radio program that was having a discussion on bigfoot. Several purported bigfoot vocalizations were played on the radio show. The witness claimed that whatever he heard that day made that exact same scream. His son, upon hearing the vocalizations played, agreed that the screams on the radio program were a perfect match for what they heard while squirrel hunting. The witness then began to do some internet research. That is what led him to file his report.
